Modern method that complements and partially replaces the well-known curettage (scraping) of the uterus. An instrument 5 to 9 mm thick is inserted into the uterus, and abnormal findings can be visualized on the video monitor and specifically treated (removal of tissue samples, ablation of polyps or myomas protruding into the uterine cavity). Various methods can be used to permanently obliterate the mucosa in order to reduce abnormally heavy bleeding (so-called endometrial ablation).
