Hormone IUD (Kyleena)

CONTRACEPTION WITH HORMONAL IUD

Kyleena® is a local hormone system that provides safe and long-lasting contraception. An elastic plastic cylinder inserted directly into the uterine cavity contains the hormone levonorgestrel, a progestogen that has been used for years in many contraceptive pills. This ensures a slow and steady release of the hormone directly into the uterine cavity. This is where the actual effect of the hormone unfolds. To securely fix this hormone-releasing cylinder in the uterine cavity, it is connected to an elastic T-shaped structure similar to some intrauterine devices (IUDs). The hormonal IUD "M" is not felt when worn.

The newer version of the intrauterine hormone system, "Kyleena ®", uses a lower dose of the hormone while maintaining contraceptive safety. This IUD is slightly smaller than the hormonal IUD "M" and therefore easier to insert in young women with an even smaller uterus.

EFFECT OF THE HORMONAL IUD

The contraceptive effect of the hormonal IUD is based on the local release of the progestogen levonorgestrel, which is evenly released from the hormone cylinder of the spiral into the uterine cavity.

CONTRACEPTIVE SAFETY HORMONAL IUD

The hormonal IUD is one of the most reliable methods of contraception, comparable to the pill or sterilization. Extensive studies have shown that out of 1000 women who used a hormonal IUD for more than 1 year, only 1-2 women became pregnant. Protection against pregnancy is immediate after insertion of the hormonal IUD. Safe contraception with hormonal IUD exists for 5 years.

SIDE EFFECTS HORMONAL IUD

During the first 3-6 months, spotting may occur due to the changes in the mucous membrane. However, some women may also experience prolonged or increased menstrual bleeding during this time. These bleeding changes should not worry you, as they are not a sign that the spiral is in the wrong position. If you experience unusually heavy, prolonged bleeding, you should consult your doctor to find out the cause. Rarely, impure skin, hair loss and mood swings occur as side effects.
